When Keren returned to the UK to care for her father, I returned to Australia to find us somewhere to live. Our belongings went into storage while I travelled back and forth between Australia and the UK, searching for accommodation during the difficult post-pandemic years. The constant travel eventually took its toll, and I developed a hernia that required surgery.
While recovering from the operation, I received the news no parent ever wants to hear. Phillip’s collapse came like a thunderclap in the middle of my own recovery.
Just ten days after my procedure, I set aside my exhaustion and travelled to Sweden to be by his side. For eight weeks, I wasn't a doctor and I couldn't change the course of his illness, but I could be there. Sometimes that meant sitting quietly beside him, sometimes helping around the house, sometimes simply giving Anne-Sophie a chance to rest. It didn't seem like much, but families survive these moments by helping one another in small ways.
Returning to Keren in July slowly restored my strength.
In September 2022, I finally secured a lease on a townhouse in Redbank Plains.
It was not the seaside home in Redcliffe we had once hoped for, but it was a place to settle — a place to begin again. Looking back, I see a journey marked by upheaval, but also by resilience.
Keren remained my constant companion throughout those difficult years.
Whether in England, Australia, or Sweden, we faced each new challenge together.
Whatever storms came, we faced them together, and in that, I found the meaning I had been searching for: to love and to be loved.
Looking back, I realise that life continued to test us right into our later years. Illness, loss, uncertainty and change all came our way. Yet they also reminded me what truly matters. Not possessions. Not business success. Not even where we happened to live. What mattered was being there for the people we loved. If this autobiography has taught me anything, it is the simple truth I discovered over many years and many countries: to love and to be loved is life's greatest adventure.
